Garage door springs do the real work - they offset the weight of the door so the opener can lift it. When a spring breaks, the door becomes a 150-400 lb dead weight, and the opener can’t safely lift it. Replacement is the single most common service call we run.

  • Springs always replaced in matched pairs
  • Correctly sized to door weight
  • 10,000-20,000 cycle springs standard
  • 1-year labor warranty

Torsion vs extension springs

Modern doors use torsion springs mounted above the opening - safer, longer-lived, and quieter. Older doors and many single-car doors use extension springs running along the horizontal tracks. We replace both, but if you have aging extension springs without safety cables, we’ll usually recommend converting to torsion at the same time.

Why sizing matters

The wrong spring is the #1 reason a “fixed” door fails again within a year. We measure the door, calculate the correct wire gauge, inside diameter, and length from the door specs, and install a matched pair so cycle life stays balanced. Mismatched springs wear unevenly and shorten the life of the rollers, cables, and opener.

Safety, plainly

This is the repair we most strongly advise against DIY. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break a wrist, an arm, or worse. The right winding bars, in trained hands, take minutes. It’s the right call to hire out.

Frequently asked questions

Why replace both springs if only one broke?

They wear at the same rate. If one is at end-of-life, the other is days or weeks behind. Replacing the matched pair costs less than two separate service calls and keeps cycle life balanced.

How long do garage door springs last?

Standard springs are rated for ~10,000 cycles - roughly 7-10 years at typical residential use. High-cycle springs (15,000-20,000+) cost a bit more and are worth it for heavily used doors.

How fast can you replace a spring?

Same day in most of our service area when you call before noon. Trucks carry the common sizes for most residential doors.

Had a problem with our opener rail and another broken hinge. Great service with nice workmen who serviced the whole door too. Very happy.
